Congratulations to Sarah #47 she won the Schwinn Bike!!

“My parents taught me how to ride a bike. When teaching my kids to ride I remain patient and tell them when they can ride without training wheels they can get some new gear for the bike, like a cool bell :)”

Summer means it’s time to hit the three B’s –  Backyard BBQ’s, the Beach and Bikes!  I think we can all remember learning to ride a bike, sure there were some bumps and bruises along the way but learning to ride a bike is a very important milestone not just in the child’s life but in a parents too!  It’s a small piece of independence and boost of confidence when a child takes off without any training wheels and when you asa parent can let go of that seat. This past spring I taught my daughter how to ride her bike and now she is flying around the park, it’s a fun thing to watch!  Bikes are also a great way to keep the kids active this summer, and now more than ever kids need to get up and get moving.

Savvy Sassy Secret:  I taught my daughter to ride her bike on an empty baseball field and I swear this was the secret to my success.  She was more comfortable without other kids and people around her or trying to stay on a narrow path.  She was pretty stable to begin with but you can have them aim towards the outfield and try to get them to just make it to the grass.  Then if they fall it’s a soft landing!

Then we found that just going around the baseball field in a circle with no pressure to come to a stop actually worked the best.  She just kept going around and around and around!  This gave her so much confidence and really helped her balance and eventually just come to a stop on her own without falling.  I’m telling you, the empty baseball field is the secret.

Don’t forget the fun bike accessories like these helmets and knee pads!

Schwinn Bike helmets and gear at Target  and  Paul Frank Bike Helmet and knee Pads!

  6. What a great idea!! Mine is trying to learn in a cul-de-sac and the turning is making it way hard. Plus all his buddies are watching.

My auntie tried to teach me, but I’m a bit of a perfectionist and “i could do it MYSELF!!”

Got the youngest a balance bike like this and I think it will make a massive difference!!!

  7. mom and dad did it. I don’t remember my bike but my brother had an orange 10 speed when I was learning.

  8. My mom and Aunt Peg taught me. I remember when I finally got to take my training wheels off, and I flew around the schoolyard. Then I looked back and realized my Aunt Peg was still holding onto the seat, helping to support me – I was so bummed! It wasn’t long after that I finally did it on my own! I now have a 2 year old, and I am looking forward to teaching her how to ride a bike!

  9. My dad taught me how to ride my bike.

  12. I actually never learned to ride a bike when I was a kid. I learned as an adult but still don’t feel comfortable on one. That’s why it was extra special for me this week when I watched my 5 1/2 year old ride around on her bike without training wheels. I was actually just going to write a post about it. Just came to your site and Lil saw the image of the Schwinn and said, ooh, I want that! So, here’s my entry. : )

  13. My cousins learned how to ride a bike first so they taught me when I would go visit because I did not have one. I don’t have a technique, my husband taught our daughter.

  14. My father taught my sister and I to ride a bike with knee pads elbow pads a helmet and goggles (lol). He made sure we were very protected. We were his princesses and he didn’t want us getting scuffed up but he wanted us to have fun and enjoy ourselves and we did and we completed the task. He passed away but we still love him very much.

  15. My dad taught me & it just took lots of practice & patience (on his part since I’m kinda clutzy). I think being encouraging and having lots of patience is the key to keep your little one from getting discouraged. The baseball field is a great tip, I will use that thanks!

  106. I don’t remember who taught me how to ride my bike. I do however have a memory of my bike and my grandma. We were racing up the driveway, as fast as my legs could pedal… I was in the lead. I looked back to see by how much. Then SMASH I powered right into the stone wall, pride and all. My grandma passed when I was 7.
That is oddly one of my best memories! I would love a bike for one of my two littles kiddo’s. They will be learning soon.

  121. I taught myself to ride a bike. My dad said he wouldn’t buy a bike for me until I knew how to ride one. I guess he thought that I wouldn’t find a way & he’d get out of buying a bike, but he strongly underestimated me. He still does.

For my older child, I found an empty church parking lot to teach her how to ride.

  122. Ok so with the twins turning four in two weeks I need both. But in any case I love the idea of learning to ride on a baseball field. Having a softer landing simplifies everything. Especially since the first time I ever rode a two wheeler I flipped over the hood of the neighbor’s car. Oops.
