I HEART New York City {$250 Travel Giveaway}

This is the final post of a travel series about Taking the Kids to New York City!

Editors Note: My heart goes out to those on the East Coast affected by #Sandy.  I have been to New York at least 10 times and I often stay in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn with my good friend Nicole of MomTrends.  It practically feels like a 2nd home.  This summer we had the pleasure of taking our kids to New York for the first time and this travel series was already scheduled before the devastation.  I hope you can see these posts as a celebration to the greatest city in the world.  I heart New York City – Andrea

BEST NYC picture EVER.

This picture was taken bey a complete stranger.  He was riding his bike and literally stopped and said “This is just too cute, I have to take a picture”  So he snapped a photo with his phone and sent it to me via email right there on the spot.  I cannot thank that New Yorker enough.  This picture says it all.

We are all eating the typical New York city food:  Hudson and I are eating a slice of pizza, Harris has a gyro and McKenna has a hot dog.  The perfect New York City  tourist lunch.

To Summarize:

Where we stayed:  The Residence Inn TIMES Square.  We had a two bedroom suite that was larger than most New York city apartments!  The location was walking distance to TIMES Square and right across the street from Bryant Park.  We had a complimentary breakfast each morning and I even made use of the laundry machines to wash a few of the kids items.  A great family-friendly hotel.

Where we went:  Bryant park, Battery Park and The Statue of Liberty, TIMES Square, Central Park, The MOMA, Spider-man on Broadway, FAO Schwartz, Top of the Rock, and Dylan’s Candy Bar.

Trip Highlight:  The night time pedi-cab ride through TIMES square.  I will never forget the happiness on my kids faces racing down the middle of the street, whizzing by the cabs and all the lights of TIMES Square.  Costly, but priceless.

Favorite meal:  Our random lunch from all the classic New York City street vendors.  Seriously.  But we also loved hitting up the corner deli’s that had great hot and cold salad bars.

What to skip:  We went to eat Jekyll & Hyde and ended up leaving because it was like sitting in someones creepy basement.  It had no windows at all and there was all kinds of random crap hanging from the walls.  I lost my appetite from the moment I walked in.   As soon as we saw the strange mental patient like character roaming around the restaurant moaning,  McKenna and I were out of there.  Gross.

Ellens Stardust Diner.  My good friend and very reliable source told me to take the kids here because it had singing waiters.  From the moment we walked in it was very loud and very crowded.  I wasn’t sure if the singing was bad or that the speakers were broken.  We did get seated right away but when we sat down at our table my daughter literally covered her ears and started to cry.  I thought for a moment she should suck it up, but she was right, it was piercingly loud and so we left.

Family Travel Tips:  Make a list of all the things you want to see and do.  Put them in order of most importance.  You’ll walk a lot, wear comfortable shoes.  Din;t be afraid to eat from the street vendors.  Negotiate your pedi-cab ride.  Be silly in the souvenir shops.  Take the subway with the kids, they’ll love it.  Dance on the FAO Schwartz piano.  Splurge and take a cab if you or your kids are tired, why cause a melt down.

Favorite place in New York City:  Central Park

I hope this travel series has helped if you are thinking of Taking the kids to New York City!  Everyone should see New York City at least once in their life.
