Winter Getaway

I know most of you are trying to get out of the snow this winter, but you know what they say, “if you can’t beat them then join them”  So pack your bags and hit the slopes this winter.  Family vacations don’t always have to mean sand and surf. Check out the Best Colorado ski resorts for families or head to Mammoth Mountain for some Spring Break this year.

If your idea of a winter family vacation consists of you sipping a hot toddy by the fire and reading a good book while Dad takes the kids skiing, that’s okay too.  Either way, you’ll need to know what to pack and we have some winter essentials you should definitely put in your suitcase. You will spend some time off the mountain and you’ll want to get out of those ski pants at some point.

How to pack for a work trip in the city

1.  A Flannel Shirt.  This is not your father’s flannel shirt. Flannel shirts can be cute and super stylish. In fact, the right flannel shirt can even be dressed up by unbuttoning the first few buttons and putting on a statement necklace. Put on those skinny jeans and you are ready for dinner — rustic elegance.

2.  Leggings. These will go along way on a winter trip. Wear under your ski gear or under your jeans for an added extra layer of warmth. Wear them with boots and a long, oversized sweater or denim shirt and they’re totally acceptable as pants. Leggings are also super comfy for the plane ride.

3.  Large tote. There are always a lot of basic travel essentials and tech gadgets to haul around so you need a big bag to put them in. I also like having extra room for water, snacks and an extra scarf or pair of gloves. Your large tote needs to be a bit of a winter survival kit, just in case.

4.  Mittens or gloves. I love a cozy pair of mittens. I realize they may not help you with your texting or status updates on Instagram, but when playing in the snow you should be playing in the snow!  Mittens are cute and perfect for walking in the snow or just sightseeing and riding up the gondola.

5. A cool coat.  A winter coat does not have to always be your ski or snowboard jacket. When you are off the slopes, you’ll want a coat to wear walking around the town, shopping and going out to dinner. Find a coat that is casual but has a little flair or faux fur!  Think rustic elegance.

6. Boots are a no-brainer. Bring boots that actually keep your feet warm, leave your leather riding boots at home. You need a pair of cozy fur-lined boots to keep your toes toasty. Bring some fun patterned thick socks to go inside those boots, when you take off your boots and put them by the fire your toes will still be lookin’ good.

7. No one wants to do their hair when up at a cabin in the woods, so hats are essential. Bring a few to wear so not every picture of you you have on the same one. From stylish knit hats to flannel, wool and fur you could have a different hat for each day. They are a small accessory to pack so they don’t take up that much room.

8.  Pack at least three sweaters.  A fair isle sweater for the daytime, a slimming turtleneck sweater that can be dressed up at night for dinner and a longer, large cowl neck sweater to be worn with your leggings. These sweaters are staples and perfect for a stylish ski vacation.

9.  Your favorite jeans are a must.  Boyfriend jeans are the way to go here. Boyfriend jeans are perfect for a day of travel — if they truly are your favorite, they’ll feel just as comfortable as your pajamas. These jeans are also roomy enough that if it gets really cold, you can wear leggings underneath.

10.  Scarves, they keep you warm. Just like hats, you should bring more than one. Even if you have been wearing the same jeans and sweater all week a scarf can at least change it up a bit. You can never have enough scarves.

What are your winter travel must-haves?
