Shark Week snack idea: shark bark

In Living by Carrie Beth & Jen1 Comment

It’s Shark Week! Our boys are totally into everything related to sharks and love learning about these sea creatures. From watching television programing to reading shark fact books and even playing with their shark toys, they can’t seem to get enough. To get our families in the mood for Shark Week, we created this ferociously delicious snack. Shark bark is the perfect simple snack to take a bite out of this week!

Shark bark

We love a good bark recipe because it is always so simple to make! Throw some toppings on melted chocolate, let it harden and bam — best treat ever. We’ve made it for pretty much every holiday and occasion, but after finding shark shaped gummy fruit snacks at our local grocery store, we knew we had to create some yummy shark bark to go along with the themed week.

  • Blue and white candy melts
  • Assorted sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Melt candy melts following directions on package.
  3. When both blue and white candy melts have been melted, spoon alternating colors on the parchment paper. (Note: This step doesn’t look pretty, but trust us…it will!)
  4. Using a toothpick, move it through the melted candy to mix the colors and create a swirl effect. Continue mixing until you’ve created the look of ocean waves.
  5. Add sprinkles and gummy sharks.
  6. Place cookie sheet in refrigerator for approximately one hour to harden the candy.
  7. Gently break the candy apart into desired serving sizes.
  8. Store in airtight container until you are ready to serve.

Kids in the kitchen

The great thing about shark bark, besides the taste, is that it was the perfect recipe for our kids to help with. They started by helping sort the sharks by color and decided which ones to use on the bark. Next, they loved helping swirl the candy melts to create the look of ocean waves and thought it was like magic. Lastly, they helped add the sprinkles and shark shaped gummy fruit snacks to create the ocean scene.  Anytime we can get kids in the kitchen it makes for fun family time and this treat was, by far, one of their favorites to help create!
