Easy to Make Summer Throw Pillows

Ever notice how your living room’s muted tones start to look down right boring against the backdrop of a colorful, fun summer? I do. Without fail each year, I find myself drowned in a sea of the “same old same old.” The big question is, how do you decorate with lots of color and flair without making a huge commitment to large pieces of furniture or art? Check out these easy to make throw pillows that will give your home a much needed pop of color on the cheap.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Cotton batting
  • Square, cotton or fabric napkins
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Head out and find several vibrant cloth napkins.  You’ll need two napkins for each pillow that you will make. The ones pictured here are from Crate and Barrel and Anthropolgie. The stuff at the latter store is so cute, I’ve even used some of their elaborate dishtowels to make a rectangular shaped pillow, instead of square.

If you want to get creative you can make your pillows with two different cloth napkins – a print on one side and a coordinating color on the other.

Sew up three of the four side, leaving the fourth open so that you can stuff it with the cotton batting. When done, sew up the last side. If you want to get fancy, you can close the fourth side by incorporating buttons or a zipper.

So, there you have it. Toss these guys on your couch, outdoors when company is coming over, in the bedroom, or anywhere really!

Moms, share your quick and easy decorating tips here!
