My 4 minute date with Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp’s new movie The Rum Diary is much funnier than I had anticipated!  This story takes place in Puerto Rico and well their is a lot of drinking.  There is also a lot of smoking.  I am not sure if Johnny Depp’s character Paul Kemp takes more sips of Rum or smokes more cigarettes?  If I see it again I will be sure to count and get back to you.  The Rum Diary is a tribute to Johnny Depp’s good friend Hunter S Thompson and he literally found the story in a old box in the basement of Hunter’s house, they talked about producing it for years and well it finally happened.  Unfortunately without Hunter, as he passed away in 2005.

I was able to interview Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Amber Heard and Johnny Depp for ivillage.com.  WTF?  I am still scratching my head a little on this one myself.  I appreciated ivillage trusting me to do this job, but I think I was a little in over my head.  I am not a trained TV reporter, journalist or entertainment news person but I gave it a go!  Me interview with Johnny Depp?Shouldn’t that be left for Ryan Seacrest and Larry King.

What the hell did I just agree too!!??  I was nervous as HELL. I think I was just as nervous as meeting Oprah, maybe a bit more.  So why did I say yes?  Because if you don’t take risks life gets pretty boring.  I’m a YES person, I can’t help it.  I like challenging myself and if something scares you – you should DO IT.  This scared me, I did it.

I get 4 minutes with each actor, you are in and out.  My first interview was with Aaron Eckhart and it went pretty good – he was so nice and even stood up to greet me and shook my hand.   He looked me in the eyes and was calming and very sweet.  Next I go down the hall to Giovanni Ribisi he was a fun interview and very engaging.  He greeted me and he even made sure he was saying my name correctly.  He was fantastic and probably my favorite interview of the day.  Both Aaron and Giovanni’s interviews were good so I was feeling really good, then my interview with Amber Heard went south.   I messed up it was my fault, tried to re-cover and she was not so forgiving.  It was terrible, again I am not a pro.

So now I head down the hall to interview Johnny Depp.   The 5 questions ivillage and I prepared are 2 movie questions and then 3 fatherhood/personal questions.  I get told no personal questions and movie questions only.  Oh shit.  So now I am nervous, shakin’ from the last bad interview and now I only have 2 questions and my mind goes totally blank.  I am sitting across from Johnny frickin Depp people.  I have no real memory of what I said or what he said.   I remember his face, those glasses and that hat, but the rest….well watch for yourself!

(I was so scared I had to watch with only one eye open)

  1. “Yet”

You said you’re not a pro.

I would say “you’re not a pro YET”, honey.

You’re *great* for no training, little experience, and no actual DESIRE to be a “pro interviewer”.

Times – they are a changin’ anyway.

“Pro Interviewers” come off as so cheesy and fake most of the time – don’t be one of them, ever. You’re authentic. SO, a bit more experience and keep your authenticity and you’ll be a ‘pro’ in no time.

    Love ya,
    Your DH, Harris 🙂

  2. Wow! You go girl! You look like a pro to me! Johnny Depp is so dreamy, if I were in your shoes, it would be a challenge just to pronounce the words correctly 🙂
