Thank you to Disney Book Group for gifting us the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan and sponsoring this post. All thoughts and opinions are our own.
It’s that time of the school year where we are all just “ready” Projects, homework, school lunches, math problems we don’t even understand ourselves, fundraising…oh we are so ready for a break. We’re not sure who is counting down the moments until that final bell rings and the carefree days of summer can begin – the kids? The teachers? Or us?
(Spoiler alert: It’s totally us.)
We can’t wait to turn off those alarms (pretending to ourselves that we will actually get the chance to sleep in), and enjoy the fact that the only schoolwork that we have to worry about is summer reading. Summer reading is a task that we are actually fully behind – especially this summer. This summer we’ve chosen something so exciting that even our self-proclaimed “non-readers” are looking forward to their daily reading. Pages jam packed with heroic characters, fantastical monsters, and epic quests made the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan an easy crowd-pleasing choice to make when it came to determining summer reading options.
Why Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series?
We are avid readers and love nothing more than getting lost in a good book. As children, reading was a fun way to escape into a new world, make new discoveries, and learn about a world beyond just the tiny little space we occupied. We would tote our books with us where ever we went, ready for any free moment that came our way to become a part of whatever adventure the pages brought to us. Not to mention the minute we discovered our love for reading “adult swim” became moderately less of a hinderance. To this day we still look forward to those lazy summer days where we can soak in a good story poolside. We want our children to grow up with that same enthusiasm for reading. So, we try to suggest books to our kids that we know they will love.
When we heard about Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series we just knew it was the perfect choice for summer reading. Comprised of five action-packed books that have been on the top of the New York Times bestseller list for over 500 weeks, we knew it was a hit already amongst our kids ages. Once we learned the fantasy series featured Greek mythology and a fresh exciting new way to learn about the Olympians, the Titans, and more, the deal was sealed for our summer reading selection.
Meet The Lightning Thief
Here’s a quick look at the synopsis of The Lightning Thief, which is the first book in the series.
“Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school… again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now Percy and his friends have just ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.”
