Best Friends & Business Partners

Deciding to go into business with your best friend is a decision you do not want to take lightly, it may sound like a lot of fun but if you want to be successful you’ll have to constantly work at balancing the professional relationship and the personal relationship.

Here are 3 Key Ingredients to having a Successful Working Relationship.  Then watch Amy and Allison the creators of COVERPLAY tell it like it is and share more tips for Start Up Success!

1.  Establish Responsibilities –  Have clear defenitions of who is in charge of what and know your strengths and weaknesses.  Amy and Allison know who they are and they each bring different talents to the table, they may do things differently but they respect one another.  They wake up with the same goals and are determined to do what it takes to make their business flow.

2.  Communication – Talk about it, have an argument but then move on.  You have to let things go to keep moving forward.  Amy and Allison have had some major conflicts and disagreements but they know their goal, so they work it out and focus on what is best for the business and keep going.   The upside of being friends is they really don’t have boundaries, they are comfortable with one another and can share just about anything.

3.  Take a Time Out – Get out and play together.  Keep the friendship alive by scheduling some non-work related activities!  When they are feeling a little stressed they head out and get manicures & pedicures.  Taking a moment to re-group and relax your mind is extremly important, even though not answering the phone can be a struggle.

  1. Couldn’t agree w/ these 3 principles more. I started SkinnyScoop w/ one of my best friends Erin Crocker. For the first few months it was just the 2 of us in my home office until we brought on a couple other folks & moved to a “real” office. There are challenges & days that don’t go as planned but overall things are working very well. One thing I would add is that you should also talk about what you want out of this in addition to responsibilities. If someone wants a nice lifestyle business & the other person sees themselves building something big & selling it, you may want to reconsider…

  2. Love the video! These women really have a great balance. Communication is definitely key.

  3. I like the idea of doing something non work related. You probably formed a partnership for a reason. It’s nice to not think work all day.

  4. This reminds me how nice it is to have a partner in business – going at it alone can feel very overwhelming. (speaking from experience).

  5. Love Coverplay! I remember seeing them on Shark Tank! Both my husband and I loved the idea and wished it was available everywhere when we travel! Even to be able to take it with us!! We usually pack our own pack and play sheet to take along to hotels, but to have this waiting for us would be awesome!

  6. I am just about to bring on my first employee for my business so this was great to watch, Hopefully we will have as much fun (and sucess)

  7. It’s a double edged sword.. if it goes good, yall are even better friends..

but.. if things don’t go right.. it can ruin a great friendship.
