A Farmhouse Nursery With A Nod To Travel

When I was pregnant with my third, I was thrilled finally decorate a boy’s room. I knew I wanted a farmhouse nursery with a travel theme. My biggest road block was that our current home did not have a bedroom for our sweet boy. After house shopping for what seemed like months (the day we brought my son home we went to view two homes), we finally found our dream home. When Landon was 2 months old, we moved in and I set a goal to have his room finished by 4 months. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t finished until he was 8 months old. Trying to unpack and furnish a home with two toddlers and a newborn is tough!

Picking the Perfect Crib

Before he was even born we settled on the Fairway Crib and Dresser from DaVinci Baby in Rustic Grey. I loved this neutral base for his room. The crib converts into a toddler bed and eventually a full sized bed (with conversion kits sold separately). The shiplap inspired headboard gave me a great starting point for a farmhouse nursery style. I also appreciate the matte black hardware to use as a neutral accent color in my decor. The finish on this collection is something else I love, with a beautiful shine when the light hits it but not too glossy overall.

I wanted to keep the majority of the room very neutral with the color coming from the walls. My husband found an inspiration photo for the room and from there we decided on these beautiful blue walls. We chose traditional farmhouse nursery nods such as the galvanized letter L, the industrial style lamp, and a wall shelf made from wood and pipe.

The Details Matter

I always like to keep the area above the crib very simple so I chose this vintage style map. We have loved the Cocoon Cam because of the breathing monitor and helpful notifications so I was happy to decorate around its placement. (You can find my full review of the Cocoon Cam here). This map does a great job of drawing the eye away from the camera while continuing my travel theme.

I love decorating with greenery because I feel like it brights up a room. We chose a faux fiddle leaf fig, placed in a basket from Target, as well as another faux plant on the small table beside the glider. This table had been restored by my grandfather years ago, then my mom painted it grey for the nursery. The glider was repurposed from my first daughter, and I love that I get a rock another baby in it. Having pieces in the room that bring in nostalgia gives me the best feeling and I feel like that is a key part of a farmhouse nursery.

Choosing the Travel Theme

We decided on a travel theme as some of my husband’s favorite memories were weekend trips we would take to explore new places. One of my favorite decor tricks in a nursery is a gallery wall above the dresser. It is the perfect spot to pack a punch. I chose 4 different modes of transportation, knowing I specifically wanted a train as a nod to my father’s career on the railroad. To bring in a difference in texture we chose the string art and the wood and metal boat. Since we wanted to inspire adventure this laser cut hand lettered sign fit perfectly. I chose transportation themed books to fill the industrial shelf.

As in my previous nurseries, I once again chose an Ubbi diaper pail. I appreciate that the metal does not hold smells and it does not require special bags. I used a small metal caddy to hold diapers to make changing as simple as possible. This room has no overhead lighting so it was important for me to have a few lamps. I flanked each window with thick, grey patterned curtains that bring more texture and warmth to the room.

The Perfect Crib Mattress

It was overwhelming to pick out a crib mattress, but I found the holy grail in the Nook Pebble Air Crib Mattress. This nontoxic crib mattress is antimicrobial, breathable, and water resistant. The cover zips off so you don’t have to use a separate waterproof mattress cover. PSA: If you don’t have these on all the beds in your house, buy them now! I love how soft the mattress is and that it has an infant and toddler side. It such a good feeling knowing that your baby’s safe sleep space is a comfortable one.

Overall I am really thrilled with how this farmhouse nursery and travel theme came together. It is definitely a space that will grow with Landon while staying consistent with the other styling of our home. If you are working on a nursery- tell us about your theme and inspiration!
