Footloose Movie Review and video interview

Footloose:  Yes, they went and made a brand new Footloose movie for the kids of 2011. Most people are rather upset over the making of this iconic film and I completely understand.  When I told people I was going to see the film and interview the director and cast, everyone I spoke to just wanted to know “Why?”  Why remake Footloose?  Don’t get me wrong I was a little turned off as well, I LOVE Footloose and I think I may have watched the original Footloose at least 75 times (no exaggeration).  Trust me, I went into this very skeptical.  I thought for sure this was going to be some over the top, sexy teenage dance / musical.  I thought this mostly because the new Ariel was being played by Julianne Hough from Dancing with the Stars.  Plus, who could replace Kevin Bacon, I mean come on!

To much to my surprise I had a blast watching this movie, it made me smile, laugh and I even had to stop my feet from moving. From the opening shot of just the feet dancing and the Footloose song playing it brought back lots of memories and instantly set the tone.  I thought, okay just sit back, relax and  have a good time.    Ren Mccormick is played by Kenny Wormald and well he’s pretty easy to look at for 2 hours (he’s 27 so it’s okay).  I loved Kevin Bacon too, but I honestly thought Kenny did a great job as a modern Ren and he did the part justice. Julianne Hough also did a really great job and there wasn’t any unnessecary dancing or singing that I feared they would have her do.   My favorite character was actually Willard, played by Miles Teller.  He had some great lines and I just loved this new version of Willard originally played by Chris Penn. Dennis Quaid plays Reverend Shaw Moore and Ariel’s father, sadly I was not a fan of him in this movie.

The best part about seeing this movie was seeing the iconic props and scenes again.  Everything from the yellow volkswagon bug, Ren’s skinny tie and leather jacket on the first day of school, Ariel’s red boots, the prom corsage, Willard learning to dance, Ren’s solo dancing scene, Ariel standing in front of the train, and Ren in his burgundy tux {swoon}.  They really stuck to the story and just put a modern twist on it.  The only part I couldn’t stand was when Ariel gives Ren the bible with the highlighted sections and she says a line that is pretty much asking Ren to kiss her – I hated that.  She shouldn’t have had to say anything,  he should have just kissed her like in the original.

Savvy Sassy says:  See it.

  2. It really seems like you had a blast watching the movie I have never seen! Yes, that is right I have never seen the original or new Footloose movie. Everyone I know from friends to DISH co-workers has told me that the movie is amazing and I would love it. My mother even said it was good and she loves the original. Now that I can rent it with my Blockbuster @Home service I think I just might check it out. Everyone that knows me knows that I hate dancing movies and singing ones. So this is going to be new to me. I really hope that I can enjoy it!
