Trendspotting:  Field Jackets

Fall trendspotting is one of my favorite things to do. I recently wrote about the and on that list was the up and coming color: lichen green. There are many shades of lichen green and all are very similar to the green shade you see on military fatigues and camo prints. So, it’s no surprise that lichen green is popular with both denim and jackets this fall.  Field jackets, camp jackets or military jackets, what ever you want to call them, I suggest you get one.

I like field jackets because they are not as structured or formal as trench coats are.  These jackets are perfect for staying warm as the weather gets cooler and for all you Moms sitting on the sidelines at soccer games. They make a great travel coat as well.  However, take note that this trend does come with a few warnings, because you don’t want look like you are heading off to war or on some wild safari in a jungle somewhere. I was in New York City a few weeks ago and I picked up this jacket from Mango and I have to say, I am in love with it.  When going out for dinner in Brooklyn I paired it with my dark skinny jeans, a bright orange shirt, Steve Madden boots and my Stella & Dot tech wallet.

Style tips when wearing a field jacket

1.  Wear a bright color or a crisp white shirt underneath the jacket , this contrast is necessary so you do not camouflage yourself into the background.

2.  Wear boots with heels, this will help dress things up a bit.  Do not pair this with flat military style boots, you will look like you are ready for combat.

3.  Accessorize with a large statement necklace or other fun accessories so you don’t look too serious or frumpy.

4.  Find a filed jacket that is fitted at the waist or has the capability to be cinched at the waist.  This will make it look more femine and not like a tent.
