This year, my mom celebrated a milestone birthday. As the years go on, and you buy gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, mother’s days and so on, there have been so many opportunities to buy her material things. This year, I decided that I would make her a gift far more meaningful than a pair of sunglasses or a new purse. My mom has accomplished so much in her life and she is truly an inspiration to not only me, but all of her friends, family, and colleagues, and I wanted to do something that would include all of these people.
Enter Flatterbox.

Have you heard of Flatterbox? If not, you are missing out! Let me explain how it works…
Flatterbox is a box that gets filled with all kinds of personal remarks, compliments, or words of advice for a special person. It is perfect for any occasion and is a great collaborative gift! Use it to share a memory in celebration of a birthday, share marriage advice at a wedding shower, or tips for getting through Baby’s first year for a baby shower. Anything goes!
How Flatterbox works
Step 1: Start it!
Start by visiting the Flatterbox website and creating an account at the top of the page. Once you have, click the Start Your Box button to get started.
Step 2: Create it!
Fill in the answers to a few questions that will help get you started creating your Flatterbox. You can choose the box type — Acrylic ($69) or Signature ($49), the preferred card color — 12 colors to pick from, the occasion, and the number of cards you would like — a minimum of 50 in included in every box and you can add 100 extra cards for just $15. Can’t fill up all of the cards? That’s okay, they’ll include the extra blank cards in the box, which allows you to have people fill them on on-the-spot at a party.
The best part is that you can go back and change your preferences at any time, so getting started is easy!
Step 3: Personalize it!
Flatterbox will ask a few more questions to customize your box:
Who is creating it?
This is the name that will go on the email that you will send out to all of your contributors, who are called Flatterers (so cute!). In my case, I wrote “The children of…” so that people would know exactly who it was from, even if they didn’t know me personally.
Choose the sentiment box theme
This is where you specify what you would like your Flatterers to share. Not sure what to ask your flatterers? Choose one of the ready made sentiments such as One things you like most about… or One special moment you have shared with… Know exactly what you want shared? Create your own question. My question was How has has my mom inspired you?
When will you need it to arrive?
This was my favorite question! I hate guessing if gifts will arrive and then having to backtrack to make sure that I have ordered it by the right date!
Other quick questions…
Lastly, there are a few quick questions to make sure your box is exactly as you want it! You can even choose how often you would like to Flatterbox to send you updates on the progress of the box — every day, twice a week, once a week, or never.
Step 4: Invite Flatterers!
Add contacts from you address book or type in as many email addresses as you would like and hit send! Flatterbox also creates a unique link that is available for you to send directly to your participants. Share it and watch your box grow!
Note that your Flatterers will be contributing a short sentiment, only 270 characters. If you are an avid Twitter user, it’s about the length of two tweets, so it shouldn’t take long to fill out! When your flatterers click onto the link to get into your Flatterbox, they will have no problem figuring out what to do. There are lots of prompts along the way — they even offer sentence starters and a sentiment library to browse for those who get stumped. Flatterbox really has thought of everything to make this the perfect gift!
