Inspired by the new, limited edition glow-in-the-dark wall Star Wars The Force Awakens decals that are available exclusively in General Mills Big G cereals, we put together a fun DIY Star Wars craft that will be a fun addition to the bedroom of your Force-obsessed kiddo.
Breakfast with your favorite Star Wars characters
Before you get started on this DIY Star Wars craft, you’ll want to dig into to your favorite General Mills cereals to find the limited-edition glow-in-the-dark wall decals. Available inside specially marked boxes — Cheerios, Multi-Grain Cheerios, Cookie Crisp, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Reese’s Puffs — each box contains a different Star Wars The Force Awakens character. The decals are completely mom-approved, too — they stick easily to any flat surface and, more importantly, they come off just as easily… without leaving a sticky film behind. Make sure you have your kiddos “charge” the decals up under a light source to give them the full Force to glow-in-the-dark!
Add The Force to their bedroom
With the glow-in-the-dark Star Wars wall decals as our inspiration, we created this fun DIY Star Wars canvas… and it glows when the lights go down, too!
What you’ll need:
- Blank white canvas, we used 8×10 for this project
- Black craft paint, we loved using the Delta Creative Soy Paint in Black Onyx
- Glow-in-the-dark paint, we used Scribbles 3D Fabric Paint in Glow-in-the-Dark
- Small foam paint brush
- Fine-tipped paint brush
- Paper bag to protect your work space
We started by painting the canvas with thin layers of black paint. While this soy-based paint is super washable, putting an old grocery bag or some newspaper under your work surface is still a good idea… espeically if you have little helpers!
It took three good coatings to get it to get our canvas completely black and mostly streak-free. This paint dries super quick (15-minutes per coat), so it wasn’t long before we could move on to the next step.
Using the Star Wars logo from our General Mills Cookie Crisp box, we carefully copied the logo onto our canvas with a pencil. We were even able to gently erase our mistakes as we went… and trust us, there were plenty as we perfected our logo! Not willing to risk drawing it by hand, there are tons of printable logos you can use as a template on Pinterest.
Now, the fun begins! We snagged one of our kids’ watercolor brushes to paint the logo with glow-in-the-dark paint — the sharper brush let us get into all of those crazy angles and get nice, crisp lines with our paint. Go easy on the paint, a little goes a long way and we did a couple of coats, letting it dry for the full four-hours between each one.
The funnest part about this Star Wars craft is that it doesn’t really look like much until it gets dark out and the glow-in-the-dark paint can really shine!
